Progressive Issues

Urban Independents endorses candidates who think progressively on a wide range of issues that are important to all of us.

Civil Rights

Our values of equality, opportunity and community challenge us to fight for protection against discrimination on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender, religion, physical or developmental ability, and sexual orientation.

Environmental Protections and Conservation

Because the actions of individuals and corporations have such an impact on local, regional and global communities, environmental problems must be addressed by society as a whole. Nowhere else does our value of responsibility have higher stakes than in conserving limited natural resources, and acting to prevent global climate change. Our resources are finite, and we must be responsible stewards of our earth.

Quality Public Education

Education is a route not only to personal fulfillment and economic opportunity, but also provides the skills of citizenship necessary for a robust democracy. A quality public education is the only way to ensure that our children have access to a system that is accountable to the public, exposes them to a wide range of thoughts and ideas, encompasses the community's values and is equitable for all.

Affordable Healthcare

We support universal access to affordable healthcare because a healthy society is a successful society. The responsibility for providing healthcare should be shared, and an individual's access shouldn't be limited by his or her economic or employment status.

Reproductive Freedom

Women and their families must have the right to make deeply personal medical decisions in private and in consultation with their own personal advisors, without interference from the government.

Worker's Rights

Worker's rights are critical to a strong economy and strong country. We support workers in the right to organize, to expect fair labor practices, a safe working environment, and earn a living wage.
